La pubblicazione dell’edizione critica dei tre libri delle Meccaniche di Erone di Alessandria, a cura di Giuseppina Ferriello, Maurizio Gatto e Romano Gatto per la collana «Biblioteca di Nuncius. Studi e testi» della casa editrice Olschki, segna una tappa significativa nello studio di uno dei principali trattati di meccanica del mondo antico. Tramandato da citazioni indirette – quelle dell’VIII libro delle Collezioni matematiche di Pappo di Alessandria e i rimandi interni del XXXVII capitolo della Diottrica dello stesso Erone – lo scritto del matematico e ingegnere alessandrino fu riscoperto nel 1893 grazie a Camille Carra de Vaux che presentò sul «Journal Asiatique» Le Mècaniques ou l’élevateur de Héron d’Alexandrie: traduzione francese di un manoscritto contenente il Kitâb fî raf’ a al-a.iyâ al-thaqîlah (Libro sul sollevatore dei corpi pesanti) di Qustâ Ibn Luqâ al-Ba’albakkî (820-912), copia araba del trattato di Erone. La pubblicazione che qui si presenta, oltre ad offrire una nuova edizione del testo arabo con traduzione inglese affiancata da una antologia di frammenti greci, si arricchisce del recente ritrovamento di un secondo manoscritto persiano contenente una traduzione-riduzione dell’originale di Erone. Un ritrovamento che, se ha offerto inedite prospettive di carattere filologico e scientifico nell’interpretazione del testo, ha anche aperto la strada a nuove indagini e approfondimenti sulla diffusione e conoscenza dell’opera di Erone, in particolare durante il Rinascimento. È noto come, tra Cinque e Seicento, gli ingegneri e i matematici furono affascinati dai suoi scritti teorici, in particolare Pneumatica e Sulla costruzione degli automi. Pubblicati in latino da Lorenzo Valla nel 1501, vennero citati, ad esempio, da Iacopo Barozzi da Vignola ne Le due regole della prospettiva pratica (1583) e ripresi da Giovan Battista Aleotti ne Gli artificiosi e curiosi moti spirituali di Erone (1589). Altrettanto noto come i giochi meccanici, le macchine teatrali e gli automi da lui inventati fossero spesso riproposti nella progettazione di ville e giardini. Si pensi alle realizzazioni di Bernardo Buontalenti per la villa di Pratolino. Mentre si è a lungo ritenuto che le Meccaniche fossero sconosciute, almeno sino alla citata pubblicazione di Carra de Vaux. I nuovi ritrovamenti documentali sembrano rivelare la possibilità che anche i tre libri dedicati ai problemi di geometria e meccanica fosse almeno in parte conosciuti e studiati da scienziati come Leonardo da Vinci e Galileo Galilei.
