On Wednesday 13th May 2009 the two Stückemarkt Prizes of the Berlin Theatertreffen were awarded to two young dramatists. The Stückemarkt New Playwriting Prize was awarded for the sixth time and the tt Stückemarkt commission for the third time. Both prizes were donated by the Federal Centre for Political Education.
The 2009 Prize Jury – Andrea Koschwitz (Chief Dramaturg, Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin), Milena Mushak (Director of the Federal Centre for Political Education’s festival “Politics in Free Theatre”) and Kekke Schmidt (Dramaturg, Schauspiel Stuttgart) advised by Yvonne Büdenhölzer (Director of the Stückemarkt) – selected Oliver Kluck and his play “The Meese Principle” for the New Playwriting Prize worth 5.000 Euro.
Oliver Kluck was born in Bergen on Rügen in 1980. He trained as a drainage engineer and began studying nautical engineering. Since 2006 he has devoted his time to literary writing and has since studied dramaturgy with Jens Groß and Roland Schimmelpfennig, prose with Jens Sparschuh and essay writing with You Il Kang. His first play “Courage Gives Courage” and the story collection “A Sky Full of Violas” were both written in 2007. His screenplay “Ukranian Relations” was filmed in Kiev in the summer of 2008. That year he began an essay, “Generation Meese”, from which this play was developed. Oliver Kluck lives in Berlin.The prizewinning play will be given its world premiere next season at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin.
The tt Stückemarkt commission worth 7.000 Euro presented to one of the ten authors is awarded this year to Nis-Momme Stockmann. His new play will be given its world premiere at Schauspiel Stuttgart. Nis-Momme Stockmann was born in 1981 in Wyk on Föhr. He studied Tibetan Language and Culture in Hamburg und Media Studies in Odense (Denmark), before starting the Scenic Writing course at the Universität der Künste Berlin in 2008. He won first prize at the Odense International Film Festival 2005 for his short “Ignorans”. In 2006 and 2007 he was one of the organizers of the Flensburger Kurzfilmtage. Nis-Momme Stockmann lives in Berlin and writes plays, radio plays, poetry and prose. “The Man Who Ate The World” also won an award at this year’s Heidelberger Stückemarkt.
Deutschlandradio Kultur chose a play by one of the Stückemarkt authors to be adapted for radio again this year under the title “Theatre texts as radio plays”. The text “Variations on the Kraepelin Model” by Davide Carnevali will be produced as a radio play by Deutschlandradio Kultur and broadcast in 2010. Davide Carnevali was born in Milan in 1981 and worked as an assistant to the dramaturg and actress Laura Curino at the Piccolo Teatro Milan and the Teatro Stabile in Turin. He studied Dramaturgy from 2005 at the Sala Beckett in Barcelona, and is currently completing his postgraduate studies at the city’s Universitat Autònoma. Carnevali works as a translator and critic for the Italian theatre magazine Hystrio and as an editor for the publishing house Ubulibri. He was a finalist for the Premio Riccione per il Teatro with his play “Saccarina”.
